Write and Deliver High-Impact Performance Reviews Manager Training

Turn a Mandatory Process into a Real Performance Driver

  • Performance reviews take time.  But for many organizations, that time doesn’t translate into impact.

  • Managers submit forms. HR checks completion rates. The cycle ends, but performance doesn’t improve.

We’ve seen it again and again: new systems, updated forms, revamped workflows, better tools. And still, the same question remains:
How do we make reviews actually improve performance?

2-Oct-31-2024-07-49-12-8400-PMHere’s the problem:

Most internal performance management training only covers the process.  How to navigate the system, meet deadlines, and complete the form.

That’s necessary—but it’s not enough.

What You'll Learn

Begin With a Fair Evaluation of Performance

The Right Starting Point for High-Impact Reviews

Most managers jump straight into the form, leading to vague, last-minute input. We flip the script.

Managers first step back to assess performance clearly and fairly using our Employee Performance Continuum. This helps them see and evaluate performance as a combination of Work Results & Observed Behaviors.

They then use the Performance Content Planner to organize their insights around:

  • Strengths to build on

  • Gaps that need to be addressed

  • Opportunities for growth

 Recognize Strengths with Impact

Go Beyond Generic Comments

Once strengths are clear, managers learn how to communicate them in a way that resonates.  Using a simple, research-backed formula, they practice writing and delivering specific, motivating recognition that reinforces what’s working—and inspires more of it.

Clarify and Course-Correct Performance Improvement Areas

Address Issues with Clarity and Confidence

When part of an employee’s performance is off track, review time is a critical opportunity to reset expectations and course-correct.

  • First, Start by Clarifying the Performance Issue
Managers learn to our Root Cause Analysis framework to define concerns objectively. They learn how to separate facts from assumptions and pinpoint and break down any type of performance issue.

  • Next, Reframe the Problem into a Clear Path Forward
Using our Turnaround Method, managers learn to shift from critique to action. They’ll write and deliver clear, future-focused expectations in a tone that’s direct but non-critical, making the path forward easier for the employee to understand and act on.

And if feedback was missed earlier in the year?
We show managers how to revisit it constructively—turning silence into a development plan, not a missed opportunity.
